The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress and director, Cecilia Obi-Kechere.
Newsonspot reports that her passing was announced by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) via its official Instagram page. According to the Guild, the actress died on Monday, April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
In its statement, the DGN expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting her immense contributions to the growth and unity of the association, especially within the Abuja chapter.
“On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all members of the Abuja Chapter in this difficult time. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement read in part.
Widely known as Oby Kechere, the late actress earned lasting recognition for her iconic role as “Ms. Koi Koi” in the Nollywood classic, Aki na Ukwa. Her memorable performance in the film made her a household name and secured her place in the hearts of audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
