Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of its ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in Türkiye after a prolonged illness.
Newsonspot gathered that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the late diplomat died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara. Until his passing, he served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry and had recently been appointed as Nigeria’s ambassador to Algeria by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Although his nomination had been approved alongside 64 other diplomats, Mr Lele had not yet resumed his new role before his death. His appointment came as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign missions following the recall of ambassadors in September 2023.
Born in 1976 in Bauchi State, Mr Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. Over the years, he built a distinguished career, serving in various diplomatic missions including Germany, Togo, and Saudi Arabia.
The Ministry described him as a committed and exemplary diplomat whose contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy were marked by strategic insight and dedication. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Ahmed, also paid tribute, noting that his death is a significant loss to the country’s diplomatic community.
Mr Lele was laid to rest in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites. The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, describing his death as a profound loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic community.
