Football data and statistics platform Sofascore has named Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman as the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Player of the Tournament, after he topped the competition’s performance ratings.
Newsonspot reports that Lookman, 28, finished the tournament in third place with Nigeria’s Super Eagles and therefore missed out on the official CAF Player of the Competition award. However, based on statistical analysis, the winger emerged as the standout performer of the tournament.
According to Sofascore’s ratings, Lookman recorded the highest average score of 7.82, ahead of Senegal’s Sadio Mané (7.31) and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz (6.97).
While Mané won the official CAF award, edging out Lookman and Díaz, his success was boosted by Senegal’s tournament triumph and his display of sportsmanship in the final, where he prevented his team from forfeiting amid perceived injustice.
On a purely statistical level, however, Lookman outperformed his rivals. He registered seven goal contributions, scoring three goals and providing four assists, compared to Mané’s five contributions (two goals and three assists). His four assists were also the highest recorded in the competition.

Lookman was named the most productive attacker of the tournament, with his creativity, flair, and composure making him a constant threat to opposing defences and a perfect attacking partner for Victor Osimhen.
He capped an impressive AFCON campaign by calmly converting the decisive penalty against Egypt, helping Nigeria secure a record ninth bronze medal.
