Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering retiring from professional boxing following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest associates.
Newsonspot reports that according to a report by The Punch, Joshua privately informed his family of the decision after the fatal crash, which occurred last week near Lagos. His uncle, Adedamola Joshua, disclosed this during an interview on Monday, revealing that the news brought a sense of relief to the family.
“The major thing is that he has retired from boxing. That is one thing that makes us glad because whenever he fights, we are emotionally drained,” Adedamola said.
He explained that watching Joshua fight has become increasingly traumatic for relatives, especially when he is knocked down in the ring.
“Each time he’s knocked down, it feels like our hearts are coming out of our chest. The emotional trauma is too much,” he added, confirming that Joshua personally communicated his intention to the family.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of Sina Ghami, Joshua’s long-time strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, his personal trainer. Both men were travelling with Joshua in a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Joshua was rescued from the wreckage and taken to hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries. Ghami and Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene.
In the aftermath, Joshua pledged lifelong support to the families of the deceased. He later broke his silence on Instagram, sharing photos with the bereaved families alongside the caption “My Brother’s Keeper,” accompanied by heart emojis and a military helmet symbol.
An emotional funeral service was held on Sunday at the London Central Mosque, where Janaza prayers were observed before burial rites continued.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has charged the driver, Adeniyi Kayode, with causing death by dangerous driving and other related offences. Kayode has denied the charges, and the case has been adjourned until January 20.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, had been on holiday in Nigeria following his December 19 knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.
