Lagos State Government has directed the immediate re-opening of the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege following the fulfillment of sanitation and hygienic prescriptions by the operators.
Newsonspot reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the reopening of the abattoir in a statement on his official X account on Friday night.
Wahab said the operators have substantially complied with the minimum benchmark for the operations of abattoirs in the state, which was flagrantly flouted initially, necessitating the closure.
“Part of the conditions for the reopening is that every month, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources officials will conduct a periodic inspection of the facilities at the abattoir,” he said.
“We therefore urge the operators to avoid unsanitary activities, waste mismanagement, and unhygienic handling of animal products as they conduct their businesses.”
Recall that Wahab, following the closure on June 19, 2025, had stressed that the government would not tolerate environmental degradation and unhygienic practices, warning that abattoir operators must adhere to existing environmental laws.
“There are laws guiding abattoir operations in the state. Wastewater and blood from meat processing must be treated and not discharged into public drains,” the commissioner said.
