A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, May 20, in Ibadan, Oyo State, as a yet-to-be-identified student lost his life to a stray bullet allegedly fired by policemen chasing suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as Yahoo Boys.
Newsonspot gathered according to eyewitnesses, the incident happened along Gbagi Market Road. The student was on his father’s motorcycle, heading to write his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam, when he was struck by a bullet aimed at a moving vehicle being pursued by the police.
The injured student was rushed to Welfare Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The heartbreaking news sparked outrage among residents.
Angry youths later carried the student’s body to the Oyo State Government Secretariat to demand justice and call the attention of Governor Seyi Makinde to the incident.
President of the Save the Poor and Needy Charity Initiative (SPANCI), Comrade Yemi Ezekiel Bello, condemned the incident and urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to conduct a full investigation. Bello described the officer’s actions as unprofessional and irresponsible, emphasizing that the boy’s father had raised his children alone for seven years since their mother left.
At the time of this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
