The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-owned driver’s licence in collaboration with the federal government as part of efforts to strengthen road safety and improve traffic management across the state.
Newsonspot reports that while speaking during a press briefing held in Ikeja on Monday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to approve the rollout of the new licence scheme within the coming weeks.
According to the commissioner, motorists in Lagos will have the option of obtaining either the federal driver’s licence or the newly introduced Lagos State driver’s licence once the initiative becomes operational.
Osiyemi explained that the new scheme is aimed at improving efficiency in the driver’s licensing process while reducing delays currently faced by applicants.
Providing an update on licensing activities, he revealed that a total of 56,876 driver’s licences were processed during the review period. This figure includes 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 licence renewals carried out in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He further disclosed that 1,158 international driving permits were processed within the same period.
On rail transportation projects, the commissioner stated that the second phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail project, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027 to pave the way for full commercial operations.
Osiyemi noted that the first phase of the Blue Line rail system recorded about 3.5 million passengers in 2025, reflecting increasing public adoption of rail transportation in Lagos.
Speaking on the Red Line project, he revealed that the state government has procured 24 new train coaches arranged in three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger movement along the corridor.
The commissioner also confirmed that work is progressing on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line Rail project, which is expected to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
