Adebayo Adelabu has officially stepped down as Nigeria’s Minister of Power to focus on his ambition to become the Governor of Oyo State.
Newsonspot reports that his resignation follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to resign on or before March 31, 2026. Adelabu conveyed his decision in a letter dated March 26, addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
In the letter, Adelabu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council and contribute to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He stated that his decision to step down was to enable him fully dedicate his time and resources toward contesting the Oyo State governorship election, marking a significant shift from federal responsibilities to state-level politics.
Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is no stranger to the Oyo political landscape, having previously contested for the governorship. His latest move signals a renewed and strategic push to secure the state’s top seat as political activities intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
His resignation is also seen as part of broader political realignments across the country, with key figures repositioning in preparation for upcoming elections.
Just days before stepping down, Adelabu had publicly apologised to Nigerians over the ongoing nationwide power outages, acknowledging the hardship caused to households, businesses, and institutions – especially during the intense dry season.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, he assured citizens that the situation was temporary and that efforts were ongoing to restore stable electricity supply.
According to him, the disruptions were due to factors beyond the government’s control, but authorities were working around the clock to resolve the issues and return to the progress recorded in 2025.
