Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally apologised to Nigerians over the persistent nationwide power outages currently affecting homes, businesses, and industries.
Newsonspot gathered that speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister acknowledged the hardship caused by the erratic electricity supply, especially as rising temperatures increase the demand for cooling across the country.
“I want to apologise to Nigerians… for this temporary issue that is leading to hardship being experienced, especially during this dry season,” Adelabu stated, noting that businesses, schools, and industries have all been impacted.
Despite the challenges, the Minister assured citizens that the situation is temporary and that concrete steps are already being taken to improve power supply.
According to him, Nigerians should begin to see noticeable improvements within the next two weeks, following commitments from gas suppliers and ongoing repairs on critical infrastructure.
Adelabu explained that key repairs, including those involving facilities operated by Seplat Energy, are crucial to restoring adequate gas supply to power plants.
He further disclosed that a special committee has been set up to monitor compliance with domestic gas supply obligations by producers—an issue that has long affected electricity generation in Nigeria.
The Minister also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the power sector, revealing a target to increase electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026.
“We are working round the clock to ensure improvements across generation, transmission, and distribution,” he said, adding that the government aims to surpass its previous performance levels.
The apology comes amid growing concerns over worsening power supply, largely driven by reduced gas supply to thermal power plants, alongside longstanding challenges such as ageing infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks, and financial constraints within the sector.
While Nigerians await improvements, the government has assured that efforts are in full motion to stabilise the grid and deliver more reliable electricity nationwide.
