United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced with deep sorrow the passing of its former Chairman, Chief Israel C. Ogbue, who died peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the age of 99.
Newsonspot reports that in a statement, UBA described Chief Ogbue as a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator who dedicated more than six decades to serving Nigeria’s public and private sectors, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, discipline, and institutional excellence.
Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Chief Ogbue began his career in the Federal Civil Service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later built an accomplished career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), rising through senior management ranks and retiring in 1988.
His expertise in corporate governance earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA. He joined the UBA Board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Chairman in 2011, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 2013.
During his tenure, Chief Ogbue provided steady and principled leadership during a key period in the bank’s transformation, strengthening corporate governance, accountability, and long-term sustainability practices that continue to guide UBA today.
Beyond his corporate achievements, he was a devoted family patriarch and mentor. He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman, Mr. Tony Elumelu. Known for his humility and deep faith, Chief Ogbue often credited his longevity to God’s grace and encouraged younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation and faith.
UBA extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and associates, celebrating a remarkable life of service, wisdom, and impact on Nigeria’s corporate landscape.
Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
