Ikeja Electric Plc has issued a public notice informing customers that electricity bills without valid identification details will be considered invalid, in line with the Nigeria Tax Act (2025).
Newsonspot reports that the company explained that the new requirement took effect on January 1, 2026, when the Tax Act officially came into force. Under the law, all invoices, including electricity bills, must contain at least one approved form of customer identification.
According to Ikeja Electric, acceptable identification details include a Tax Identification Number (TIN), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Registration Number, or the National Identification Number (NIN). The company said the move is necessary to comply with statutory provisions and ensure accurate customer records on all electricity bills from January 2026 onward.
“The Nigeria Tax Act (2025), which came into effect on January 1, 2026, mandates that all invoices – including electricity bills – must contain at least one of the following identification details: Tax Identification Number, CAC Registration Number, or National Identification Number,” the company said.
Ikeja Electric has asked customers to submit any one of the required identification details by completing the designated form provided by the company.
“To enable us to comply with this statutory requirement and reflect the information on your January 2026 and subsequent bills, we kindly request that you provide any one of the above details,” the notice read.
To ensure compliance, the company set February 13, 2026, as the deadline for submission.
“Please note that the deadline for submission is February 13, 2026,” the company stated.
The electricity distributor warned that invoices issued without the mandatory identification details would be considered invalid under the law. As a result, customers who fail to provide the required information may be unable to receive electricity bills and could face suspension of service after the deadline.
“In line with the provisions of the Act, any invoice issued without this information is considered invalid.
Consequently, failure to provide the required details may prevent us from generating your electricity bill and could lead to the suspension of service after the stated deadline,” Ikeja Electric added.
Ikeja Electric urged all customers to cooperate and submit the required details promptly to avoid disruptions in billing and service.
