Security operatives on Thursday made an attempt to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja but the politician resisted the arrest.
Newsonspot learnt that El-Rufai arrived from Cairo when security operatives attempted to arrest him.
El-Rufai was said to have declined to follow the agents without a formal invitation, after which they took his passport from an aide.
According to a statement posted on X by his aide Muyiwa Adekeye, “Security agents today attempted to arrest Malam Nasir El-Rufai as he arrived on a flight from Cairo.
“Malam El-Rufai declined to follow them without a formal invitation. They however snatched his passport from an aide.”
It could be recalled that El-Rufai had said he believes he could be arrested soon.
He alleged that some of his former associates in Kaduna have already been picked up by security agencies.
He said this makes him think he could be next.
Meanwhile, in a statement he issued after the airport drama, the former governor said:
“Listen, nobody, not even the president will tell me anything. If you want to invite me, please give me a letter.”

El-Rufai, a former APC stalwart who recently moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has become a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He has characterized the recent legal actions against opposition figures – including the arrest and trial of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami – as a “political witch-hunt” and a means of forcing politicians to align with the ruling party for survival.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement on the incident. It also remains unclear whether El-Rufai is currently under investigation or facing any formal charges.
