The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, has resigned from his position following serious allegations of misconduct and leadership failures.
Newsonspot reports that according to a staff member of the commission, his resignation came after the NAHCON board submitted a petition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for his removal over alleged abuse of office and other irregularities. The source said the presidency compelled him to step down and is expected to announce a replacement soon.
Professor Usman’s last public duty was last week when he received Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfiq Al-Rabiah.
The petition, dated January 19, 2026, and signed by all 11 board members, was titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.” The board accused him of persistent leadership failures that reportedly weakened the commission’s credibility, stability, and operational effectiveness.
Among the allegations were financial indiscipline, lack of transparency, and the approval of expenditures and contracts without board consent, often exceeding budgetary limits. The petition also stated that he is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The board further accused him of violating the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) Act by awarding Hajj-related contracts without due process, thereby exposing the commission to legal, financial, and reputational risks.
