A South Sudanese man, Thon Chol Riak, has successfully married his bride, Atong Aguto Monyroor, following a lavish wedding ceremony that came after an intense marriage competition rooted in Dinka tradition.
Newsonspot reports that the high-profile wedding took place on February 1, 2025, after months of public attention surrounding the couple’s courtship and the extraordinary dowry bids presented by rival families.
The competition, which began in December 2025, involved two prominent communities publicly negotiating dowries that included livestock, cash, land, and other valuable assets. The contest drew widespread interest due to the sheer scale of the offers.
The Awulian community, supporting rival suitor Mabior Abit Biar, reportedly offered 158 cows, 161 goats, dozens of sheep, a town bungalow, seven plots of land in Juba, two vehicles, and about KSh 3.2 million (approximately $25,000) in cash.
However, the Abang community, backing Thon Chol Riak, presented a much higher bid. Their offer included 297 cows, KSh 9.9 million (around $77,000) in cash, land, additional assets, and educational sponsorships for two in-laws. This offer ultimately secured Riak’s marriage to Atong.
The scale of the dowry competition has sparked public debate. While many praised the ceremony as a strong display of cultural identity and tradition, others raised concerns about the rising cost of dowries and the pressure such expectations may place on families.
