The Super Eagles of Nigeria have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash against Algeria due to unpaid bonuses.
Newsonspot reports that the development was disclosed by BBC Africa journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco. According to reports, players and coaching staff are still owed winning bonuses for four matches played so far in the tournament.
Nigeria recorded impressive victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stage, before thrashing Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16. However, bonuses from those games are yet to be paid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Sources say the players have decided not to train or travel to Marrakech until the outstanding payments are settled, despite remaining committed to the competition.
This is not the first time such an issue has arisen. In November, the Super Eagles also threatened to boycott their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon over unpaid entitlements.
In a joint statement signed by players and officials at the time, the team said they withheld from training due to unresolved payment issues and called for a quick resolution to allow them continue preparations.
As of now, uncertainty surrounds Nigeria’s AFCON quarter-final match against Algeria, scheduled for Saturday evening.
