A Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus was on Tuesday afternoon engulfed in flames on the Third Mainland Bridge, causing serious traffic disruption around the Adekunle axis inward Iyana Oworo.
Newsonspot reports that the incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) through its official X account.
According to LASTMA, the fire outbreak occurred at about 1:00 p.m. and immediately affected vehicular movement on the busy bridge, which serves as a major link between the Lagos Mainland and other parts of the state.
LASTMA said emergency response efforts were already in progress as officers were deployed to the scene to manage traffic and prevent further congestion.
“Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire, and our officers are on ground controlling the traffic situation,” the agency stated.
Traffic officials worked to redirect vehicles and ease gridlock while fire suppression continued.
Meanwhile, the incident has renewed concerns over the safety of public transportation in Lagos, as there have been several cases in recent years involving BRT buses catching fire under different circumstances. The recurring incidents have sparked calls for improved vehicle maintenance and stricter safety inspections to ensure passenger safety and reduce prolonged traffic congestion.
