Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning today, December 11, following the reportedly sudden death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Newsonspot reports that the incident happened around 1:30 pm while he was in his office. According to eyewitnesses, he collapsed without warning, prompting an urgent rush to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa. He was taken into the emergency unit in critical condition.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to revive him, doctors confirmed him dead minutes after arrival. Security operatives immediately tightened access around the hospital as top government officials trooped in to confirm the news and offer early condolences.
Preliminary reports suggest the tragedy may have been linked to a cardiac-related emergency, although no official medical statement has been released.
Colleagues described Senator Ewhrudjakpo as a dedicated and tireless public servant known for long working hours and a heavy schedule.
Born on September 5, 1965, the late deputy governor previously served as a federal lawmaker before taking office in Bayelsa State. He was widely regarded as a strong pillar in the state government and a key voice in policy matters.
Tributes have poured in across social media, with one message on X describing his death as “a painful and unimaginable loss,” adding that his commitment to service leaves “a huge void in government and in the hearts of the people.”
