The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of four staff members in a fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.
Newsonspot reports that the deceased – Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager) – were working at the FIRS offices on the sixth and seventh floors of the building when the incident occurred.
In a statement, Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, described the tragedy as a heavy blow to the Service. He noted that the affected officers were dedicated professionals whose commitment to excellence remained unquestionable.
“FIRS is deeply shocked and saddened by this incident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of our departed colleagues and will provide every necessary support during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Adekanmbi further disclosed that the Service is collaborating with relevant agencies in Lagos to investigate the cause of the fire. He also assured that safety protocols across all FIRS offices nationwide, both rented and owned, are being reviewed to prevent a recurrence.
