Fred Smith, the legendary founder of FedEx, and the man who revolutionized global logistics, has passed away at the age of 80, the company confirmed.
Newsonspot reports that Smith, who launched Federal Express in 1973, turned a modest air delivery idea into a global shipping empire. He led the company as Chief Executive Officer until 2022 and continued to influence its direction as Executive Chairman.
From War Hero to Business Icon
Born in 1944, Fred Smith served in the U.S. Marine Corps before founding FedEx. A Yale University graduate, Smith drew from a business concept he developed during his college years – known today as the hub-and-spoke logistics system – to build what would become the backbone of overnight delivery services.
His military service included two combat tours in Vietnam, where he earned multiple decorations for bravery and sustained injuries that earned him the Purple Heart. He left the Marines as a captain in 1969.

With just 389 employees and 14 aircraft, FedEx launched operations in 1973, flying 186 packages from Memphis to 25 U.S. cities on its first night.

In a heartfelt internal memo, current CEO Raj Subramaniam said:
“Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company. He was the heart and soul of FedEx… a mentor, Marine, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.”
While Smith kept a relatively low public profile, he made a brief cameo in the 2000 film Cast Away, which featured FedEx as part of its plot.
