In a bold move signaling a tightening grip on internal loyalty, the Benue State Government has indefinitely suspended Mr. Lubem Terkula, popularly known as Akuta General, from his role as Chief Press Secretary.
Newsonspot gathered that the suspension, effective June 15, 2025, was issued by Hon. Terver Atu, Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth, ICT, and Media Mobilization. In the suspension letter, Terkula was accused of engaging in actions that “contradict the explicit directives of your Principal” – a move described as a “serious breach of duty and trust.”
Though the official letter did not specifically reference the #EndBenueGenocide movement, reliable sources link the decision to Terkula’s alleged sympathy for or involvement in the protest. The #EndBenueGenocide campaign has grown into a major civil outcry against continued violence and insecurity in parts of Benue State.
During the period of suspension, Mr. Terkula is barred from performing any official duties or representing the office in any form. The duration of the suspension remains indefinite, pending the outcome of a full review by the Governor’s office.
This action appears to reflect the Alia administration’s strict approach to managing dissent, particularly surrounding sensitive security issues.
As of now, the future of Mr. Terkula’s position remains uncertain.
