RT. HON. Oluwadamilola Fatimat Agbaje, the Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State Youth Parliament and a passionate advocate for gender equality, youth leadership, and education, passed away unexpectedly on June 11, 2025. She was 24.
Newsonspot reports that the news was confirmed in a heartfelt Twitter post by her brother, Olufemi Talabi, who wrote:
“She was truly a star and was full of joy, warmth and light. More than a sister, she was like a daughter, given the significant age gap.”
Widely known on Twitter as “Gen-Z Honourable” (@D_e_e_lish), Damilola was a rising voice in Nigerian activism, blending intellect, charisma, and policy insight with Gen Z energy and bold feminist ideals. As of this report, the cause of her death remains unknown.
Born for public service, Damilola was a first-class law graduate and the best graduating student from Elizade University’s Faculty of Law (2018-2023). She was also the second-best overall student in her graduating set and a decorated British Parliamentary Debater, winning Best Female Debater at the All Nigerian Universities Debating Championships in 2019 and 2022.
As a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) advocate, Damilola led various initiatives focused on youth inclusion, gender equality, and policy reform. She represented Oye Constituency II in the Ekiti Youth Parliament and served as the Chairperson of the Committee for Ekiti Youth Policy Review.
In national leadership spaces, she was the Deputy Majority Leader in the 3rd Parliament of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative initiated by Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the current Chief of Staff to the Nigerian President.
Damilola also founded The Consciousness Movement, an initiative that empowered Nigerian youth through public speaking and critical thinking. She hosted The Legal Hangout podcast, simplifying legal issues for everyday Nigerians.
Her legislative legacy includes sponsoring a motion for compulsory sexual and reproductive health education in secondary schools. Through her leadership, she organized projects like Youth Agenda 2030, the Inter-Parliamentary Leadership Exchange, and a youth opportunity database for Ekiti State.
Her advocacy extended to issues like sexual harassment, female genital mutilation (FGM), and inclusive leadership. She also spearheaded the Women in Parliament initiative to strengthen female political representation.
Damilola held certifications in Agripreneurship and African economic ideologies, was a member of YALI (Young African Leaders Initiative), a student of the Atlas Leadership Academy, and a Chartered Arbitrator with the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators.
A life lived with purpose, Damilola leaves behind a legacy of brilliance, courage, and deep love for her generation. She was more than a parliamentarian – she was a changemaker, mentor, and trailblazer whose light will continue to inspire.
In response to the tragic passing, Nigerian feminists have taken to social media to honour her life, legacy, and impact.
“Honourable Damilola Agbaje was such a bright star, a member of my women’s community, and this is such a tough loss for me.”@asangelwassayin posted on Twitter, “She was my go-to person for insight into young Nigerian women in politics and was always on the ground to answer my journo requests.”
@faree_for_real also expressed deep sorrow, describing Damilola as an impactful person:
“Oluwadamilola Agbaje was an Amazon. We used to bond over our shared love for trench music. She was a brave feminist. She was a doer. The Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State Youth Parliament. The brightest woman I know. Your name will never be forgotten”
