A tragic road accident earlier today at Mosalasi Roundabout, along New Ipaja Road in the Ipaja area of Lagos State, has left a female pedestrian dead.
Newsonspot reports that the incident involved a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV, which reportedly lost control due to excessive speed. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, the vehicle veered off the road, mounted the pedestrian walkway, and fatally struck the woman, who died on the spot from the impact.
The momentum of the vehicle carried it further into a nearby private premises known for selling livestock, where it caused serious damage to a perimeter fence and an advertising billboard.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq on Sunday, in a desperate bid to escape, the driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly intercepted and restrained by Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials, whose timely intervention prevented his escape. The driver was later handed over to security personnel from the Gowon Estate Police Command for further investigation.
The remains of the deceased were respectfully taken by officers of the Nigeria Police Force for necessary procedures.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate event. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating:
“This is a deeply sorrowful occurrence that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving. We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray earnestly that the Almighty grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
Mr. Bakare-Oki also used the opportunity to remind all motorists – both private and commercial – to conduct regular vehicle safety checks, particularly focusing on their braking systems. He emphasized that obeying traffic laws is not only a legal duty but a moral responsibility.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to strict traffic law enforcement and the promotion of road safety across Lagos State.
