Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his office on Sunday.
Newsonspot gathered that the 82-year-old was diagnosed on Friday after experiencing worsening urinary symptoms and the discovery of a prostate nodule. Medical experts confirmed a high-risk diagnosis with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)-indicating a very abnormal and fast-growing cancer.
Though the cancer is considered aggressive, it is hormone-sensitive, which allows for treatment options that can manage the disease, though not cure it. Hormone therapy is commonly used in such cases to shrink tumors and slow progression. Biden and his family are currently reviewing available treatment plans with his doctors.
This diagnosis follows growing concerns about Biden’s health and cognitive state during his presidency, which led to his withdrawal from the 2024 reelection race after a shaky debate performance against Donald Trump. Despite stepping back, Biden insisted he was capable of winning.
Further controversy is expected with the upcoming release of Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson. The book explores alleged efforts to downplay Biden’s mental and physical challenges during his term.
Biden’s health has been under scrutiny for years. In addition to his latest cancer diagnosis, he has faced previous medical issues, including brain aneurysm surgeries in 1988 and skin cancer treatments. He has also endured profound personal loss-his first wife and daughter in a tragic 1972 car crash, and his son Beau’s death from brain cancer in 2015.
Despite the challenges, Biden has remained resilient throughout his life, once responding to critics of his age and health with a firm, “Watch me.”
