The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed confidence that he will soon be granted bail after spending four years in detention. He believes he will be released by the end of April 2025.
Newsonspot reports that Kanu shared this optimism during a visit from the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA), Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
Following the visit, Ezenekwe released a statement detailing their conversation. He noted that Kanu appeared in good health, had gained weight, and remained resilient despite his circumstances.
Call for Stronger Igbo Leadership
During their discussion, Kanu reiterated his call for a referendum, emphasizing its importance for self-determination. He stated that his only “crime” was urging the Igbo people to awaken from complacency.
Kanu also voiced his disappointment over the lack of strong Igbo leadership, stressing that the absence of robust advocacy has weakened the voice of the region.
Appeal to President Tinubu
Ezenekwe highlighted the significance of the visit, describing it as a reminder of the shared struggle for justice and the advancement of Igbo interests.
He also made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take decisive action to secure Kanu’s release as a reflection of his commitment to justice.
“Let this moment mark a turning point—a renewal of our collective resolve to protect the rights, dignity, and future of the Igbo people,” Ezenekwe concluded.
