The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has thrown its weight behind the indefinite nationwide strike called by Organised Labour, urging its members to comply with the directive starting Monday.
In a statement issued by NUPENG’s General Secretary, Mr. Afolabi Olawale, the union expressed unwavering commitment to ensuring full compliance with the strike order. This move aligns with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC)’s decision to initiate the strike as a protest against the Federal Government’s reluctance to implement the proposed new minimum wage.
Mr. Olawale emphasized the union’s concern over the government’s seeming disregard for the critical issue of negotiating a new minimum wage, especially given the adverse impact of various socio-economic policies on the country’s working class.
“This is in view of the various socio- economic policies of this administration that have impoverished the working people of this country.
“Leaders of our great union at all levels, from the units, zones and branches, should immediately put all processes in place to ensure total compliance with this directive,” he added.
As preparations for the strike intensify, NUPENG leaders at all levels have been tasked with swiftly mobilizing members to ensure complete adherence to the directive. This unified stance underscores the gravity of the situation and the determination of Nigerian workers to demand fair compensation for their labor amidst challenging economic conditions.
