The Lagos State Police has detained popular singer Seun Kuti over alleged assault on a police officer.
The Lagos State Police Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed in an official statement on his Twitter handle that Seun was arrested in the early hours of Monday, May 15, 2023, when he turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in the company of his lawyer and family representative.
The statement reads;
“SERIOUS ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER: SEUN KUTI TURNS SELF IN. Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest in line with the law.
“The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.
“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” he added.
“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”
In a cryptic Instagram story on his profile (created about 7:16 pm), Seun Kuti claimed that an attempt was made on his life and that of his family.
While he claims to have proof of that, he noted that the person has apologised thus he won’t press charges against him.
He tried to kill me and my family,” he wrote. “I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges.”
Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, had ordered Seun’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman surfaced online.
