Consultants engaged by the Imo State Internal Revenue Service as Tax Audit Monitoring Agents protested against the non-payment of their 20 per cent commission agreed in their letter of appointment.
They said the state government under Hope Uzodinma had deliberately failed to pay them their commission.
Speaking to our correspondent on Monday, one of the tax agents, Mr Kelechi Onukwugha, said the state government refused to pay them 25 per cent of N12,621,167,871.85 which, amounted to N3,185, 291, 967.
He said the government had refused to pay them 20 per cent commission as enshrined in their contract letter since March, 2020.
“The Joint Tax Board that released N3,2b is asking for the receipt for the payment from the state government,” Onukwugba said.
He stated that they had been asked to apply for their 20 per cent since April, 2020, adding that up till date the government had refused to pay them.
When called on phone, the Imo state Director of Taxes, Mr Basil Iwu, said that he was not the chairman of the board, adding that he was a civil servant.”
He said, “One thing, I am sure of is that the present state government wanted to make tax collection in the state hitched-free.”
