A cleaner at Bojong railway station in Bogor, West Java has become an unlikely social media sensation for having promptly returned hundreds of millions of rupiah after unexpectedly stumbling upon the money at his workplace.
According to Instagram page @infodepok_id, the station employee came across a black plastic bag containing Rp 500 million (US$34,856) in cash during his shift on Monday.
A photo depicting the employee reporting the item has since gone viral on social media platforms, with many netizens praising the man as “honest” and “honorable”, especially considering the current economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has seen millions out of a job.
A spokesperson for PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI), which operates the commuter line service, Anne Purba, confirmed the discovery, saying the money had been returned to its owner.
“Any such item must be returned and logged in the ‘lost and found’ system,” Anne said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
“Anything left on the train will be returned to its owner.”
She added the company had issued a return receipt for the item. However, she remained tight-lipped as to the chronology of the unexpected discovery.
