Gunmen Thursday afternoon, reportedly abducted Deacon John Ulebe Nnaji, the village Head of Oshiagu Amia Ngbo in Umuogudu Akpu Ngbo Community of Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The gunmen who were reportedly in army uniforms, also abducted four other villagers, during the invasion that occurred at about 2:00pm of 1st day of April, 2021.
The gunmen, it was gathered, came on motor bikes in their numbers, and shot sporadically before taking their victims away, even as they left many persons injured.
Reason for the attack was not yet known as of the time of filing this report, but the community is among the communities of Ohaukwu LGA that have been enmeshed in communal clashes with their neighbouring Agila community in Benue State, Newsonspot.com.ng recalls.
An eye witness, Mr. Amos Otubo who spoke with our Correspondent, said they were relaxing at their village square when the gunmen stormed the village and abducted their victims.
“The gun came into the community on moto bikes, with each bike conveying about three persons. They felt relaxed when we saw them, thinking that they were military men on special duty considering the crisis in Effium Community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
“But surprisingly, we were still at the village square taking fresh air and discussing when we suddenly started hearing gun shots everywhere in the village and people started running to take cover.”
“While I was where I was hiding, I was able to spot one person’s face who is a member of the village (name withheld). He was the one that led the operation from one house to another.
Another source from the community, said, “the incident that happened in my village today was so terrible. Our village head was kidnapped by unknown gun men who came with different motor bikes into the village. When we saw them coming, my friend who sat next to me said their movement was strange to him and that he was no longer comfortable that he wants to go home but I told him to stay back that nothing would happen.
“Not quite long, we started hearing people screaming on top of their voices, running for safety and some calling their children to go and hide in a safe place.
“I and my friend had to take cover too, because the village had been thrown into confusion. The gunmen continued shooting for about 45 Minutes to 1 hour before they abducted our village Head and four other persons.
“They would have abducted more if not for the villagers were shouting and screaming on top of their voices. So, they decided to leave with the persons they so far abducted.
“The suspects were equally aware that the youths could mobilize to wage war against them, so they left hastily. We are now living in fear and tension because nobody knows what will happen by tomorrow or when next they will come back.”
The gunmen also robbed people of their belongings during the attack.
A close source to the family of the Village Head who preferred not to be named, said one of the abductees had made contact with his family.
“One of the abductees said they where taken to Igwelede-oha in Okposhi Ngbo Community in Ohaukwu LGA of the State. The kidnappers hideout is in Ejilewe in Ukwagba Ngbo Primary School in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
“The Police had told me to report the matter so that they could take proactive action towards the rescue of the victims.”
Contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Aliyu Garba, couldn’t pick calls but replied a text message sent to his mobile phone, promising to take immediate action about the information.
“Too bad, noted for further action,” the CP said in his reply, to the text message.
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, said the command had sent reinforcement to the 135 police division to ensure the abductors were rescued unharmed.
